SSUM threatens to impose counter blockade

Imphal, Nov 13, 2016:
The Socialist Students’ Union Manipur (SSUM) has urged the United Naga Council (UNC) to withdraw its ongoing economic blockade from tomorrow failing which it will launch a counter blockade from Tuesday.

Addressing reporters at the Manipur Press Club, Naorem Tanoranjan, publicity secretary of SSUM, explained that the decision to counter act against the UNC was taken out of necessity to save the future of the students in the state.
The UNC’s blockade has resulted in scarcity of petrol in the state thereby greatly affecting the transporter especially those engaged in school services, he said.
The situation has become so bad that the school vans had stopped servicing when the final examinations are just round the corner, lamented the SSUM secretary.
The matter is of a great concern to the SSUM as the question is about the students who are universally described as the future pillar, he asserted.
Naorem Tanoranjan clarified that the proposed counter blockade of the SSUM does not intend to confront the UNC but an attempt to save the career of the students.
Expressing concern at frequent bandhs and blockades along the National Highways of the state, Tanoranjan urged the state government to intervene in curbing such disturbances rather than concentrating only on election campaigning.
He further demanded that the government should deploy commando personnel to rescue stranded freight trucks along the National Highways.
The SSUM secretary also called on the deputy chief minister Gaikhangam who is also the home minister to perform his duties effectively. If he is not able to perform his duties he should resign as the home minister on moral ground.
